We are a year in and things are just getting started. It seems like only a few months ago that we made the biggest commitment of our lives. “We woke up in the kitchen saying, How the hell did this sh*t happen? … We be all night!! whooooa oh ohhh”. Well better yet, we be forever.
If God had told me in about 1997, around the time my husband was tryin’ to get dem digits, that he was gonna be my husband, I’d be like my good girlfriend Sandra and say “YOU LIE!” LOL.
Let’s take it back to Republic Gardens. If you are from the DC area you know that was spot back in the day. Well that’s where me and hubby’s paths would first cross. I don’t remember him ever asking me for my number just the slick ish he would say out his mouth confirming his interest. But I never took the bait.
Fast forward to 2009. We bump into each other at a party in DC. It was at a club but it was random. I can’t even remember the name of the spot. I find out that he’s living in the New York area and at the time I’m traveling between DC and NY for auditions. I have to mention that when I saw him and waved him down, this dude waved back but kept it moving.
I’m like no he didn’t. My face is like “umm helloooo” and my hands and mouth are moving,“come here!” I wanted catch up. I don’t know why I wanted to really, maybe I was trying to get a free drink. LOL. Most likely but later I would learn my persistence would change my life.
So he comes over. He knows my friend that I’m with also. We walk over to the bar. He buys us both a drink! Got eeeem! But we stick around and chat it up a bit. When he finds out Im in New York often he suggests we get together for lunch or dinner when I’m in town. Bet!
We do lunch at Houston’s which is Hillstone’s in NYC. One of my favorite restaurants. The “date” is very casual. We talk about why we never went out, what’s gone on in our lives over the past decade and our careers. It was really nice.
I had never got to know him outside of seeing him at the club so I got to really see his personality, charm and how funny this dude is. I still didn’t look at him like a boo. But it was cool. From there, whenever I would come in town he would look out for me. If I needed to chill at his office in between castings — I could. If I was hungry — he fed me. If I needed a ride — he would pick me up. Eventually, things would turn around for this guy. Lucky him right? LOL
We were friends for a year and then it hit me that this was someone I’d like to be around more often. He broke me down like Ole Otis y’all. I couldn’t fight it anymore. I had to give this guy an opportunity. And boy am I glad I did.
Three years later he would propose in beautiful Anguilla. We would talk about marriage but I just didn’t know when it would happen. I wasn’t pressing the issue but I knew I wanted that life with him. A little over two years from our engagement, on Sunday, September 4th, 2016, it all went down in the DM-V.
Best day and night of my life. The par-tay of the year! Surrounded by our closet friends and family. Good food (The Park at 14th), good music (DJ Clark Kent), good vibes (everyone there) and God (the master planner) was present through it all. I am so thankful for this man, for this journey, for this child we are about to bring into the world — for this year. It hasn’t been all butterflies and rainbows but there is no other person I’d rather be going through life with. Even though he gets … on … my … nerves. Men are some different people. My Lord. Love you boo!
One year down … for-eva-eva to go!
